Choosing which food to feed your beloved dog can feel a bit daunting. There are so many brands, each with a variety of formulas, that it can make your head spin. Each individual’s ultimate decision is influenced by different factors, like price, availability, and quality. In my personal opinion, if there is just one thing you splurge on as a pet owner, it should be food you are feeding them on a daily basis. Doing so can lead to a longer and healthier life.
Growing up, my family had a beautiful fawn-colored Great Dane named “Sava”. When researching dog foods for her, we came across Solid Gold and fell in love with the company’s story. They consider themselves “animal lovers, explorers, and nutritionists” with the mission of delivering “premium, holistic, natural products that allow these amazing animals to look and feel great while they live life to the fullest”. The cherry on top was that the founder of Solid Gold also owned Great Danes!
Sava had a really good life. She had me and my two siblings to play with, a large yard to run free in, and her food was open dish – as in, it was always available to her. She ate whenever she pleased, without ever overeating. Now, it was likely a combination of all these factors, and others, but Sava lived to be nearly 11 years old. The average lifespan of Great Danes is only 6 to 8 years! That she lived such a long and happy life was truly remarkable.
These days, I refuse to feed my dog anything other than Solid Gold. I suppose positive experiences like the one I had growing up can really build brand loyalty over the long term, but I’m convinced it is worth it. Our Vizsla “Denver” is only a year and half old, but she is happy, healthy, and athletic, with a coat as soft as it was when she was a puppy. She gets the “Leaping Waters Cold Water Salmon” recipe, but Solid Gold also offers a wide variety of gluten free, grain free, high protein, and vegetarian options.
It used to be the case that Solid Gold was hard to find at standard pet stores, but I have seen their products more and more often. Fortunately, we can use Chewy.com to have a fresh bag automatically delivered on a preset schedule.
